Don't Trust the Fart

How do you train yourself to run a marathon, 26.2 miles? A better question is, why would anyone pay to run that far when multiple modes of transportation exist? I’ve asked myself both questions since my first race in 2007.

The “how” to complete a marathon is readily available. Marathon training programs are available via a simple online search, a fitness app, and local running shoe stores.

Identifying the “why” is unique to each marathoner. According to multiple sources, about one million people run marathons yearly, and the road race market continues to grow.

If you desire to run a marathon, it’s a guarantee that you will not be alone. Will other runners make it easier to train and complete the race? No, but signing up can test your physical, mental, and spiritual fitness.

With the current political climate, you could reach the brink of breaking without preventative measures to stay intact. Every week, the White House and its affiliates present an additional challenge to equity work. As we formulate responses, we must also prioritize our health.

This week, I read an article about Haitians and their concerns about the anti-immigration movement. Fear and frustration surround neighborhoods in Florida.

Running can serve as a powerful stress reliever for individuals with able bodies. Signing up for a marathon and finishing can empower you to believe in your potential to persevere despite the constant threats to your livelihood and the communities you serve.

On Sunday, I finished the Napa Valley Marathon. I failed to make the Boston Marathon qualifying time for age and gender, but I crossed the line with more than sore legs. On the drive home, I reflected on my performance.

I tried to blame the weather, clothing, nutrition, and mental stamina. None of these factors significantly impacted the results. It was a rough day.

While running the course, a spectator’s sign made me laugh. It read, “Don’t trust the fart!” From more experiences than I care to admit, I resonated with the message.

Gas sometimes takes the form of a liquid or a solid mass during long training runs and competitive races. Most of us hobble directly to the bathroom after running more than 7 miles.

Believe it or not, an underwear accident can help you find purpose. It can teach you how to acknowledge the “farts” in your life that attempt to disrupt progress. The stench of anti-diversity policies stinks, but we can get through this moment in history and reach cleaner air.

Did I lose you? Hopefully, the next few lines bring everything together.

Register for a race, test your endurance, and develop courage that can be applied to multiple areas of your life. You will not regret the decision after a volunteer places a medal around your neck and you have time to reflect.
